1. Tell us your story. You are quite the multi-faceted woman - model, pageant winner. Tell us what inspired your interest in the fashion world?

When I was growing up in Sangli, a small town in Maharashtra, India, I was fascinated with fashion magazines, models, and the whole idea of this magical world of fashion. It was really enthralling but I didn’t see myself doing it. Although the whole focus was on studies like every other household back in 80s, my parents always made sure to give me opportunities to try out new things and explore myself which is still helping me in numerous ways. When I came to the US after my wedding, I happened to join a Bollywood dance troupe. While doing that, I was offered an opportunity to model at one of the events, I took it. You don’t know unless you do it, right? The thrilling comfort I felt while being in front of the camera, the true passion for the industry has kept me going and being a wife and a mother, the support my family has shown has kept me inspired to push harder and give my best.

2. You have had an incredible journey in fashion and modelling. You won  Boston Fashion Award Top Print Model 2019 and Mrs India USA Catwalk 2017. What excites you most about the modelling world? And what was a moment in your modelling career/pageant career that you hold closest to your heart?

Escapism… that’s the biggest thing for me. The diversity in fashion allows you to paint a picture of various cultures and customs. This may make me sound like an actor, but I get to escape into a role for just a few seconds, whether it’s for a photo, or a show. The need to always look my best makes me prioritize my diet, health, and fitness. The fact of earning a living doing something you love sure keeps you inspired. I also had a chance to work behind the scenes, organizing the show, bringing it all together - this was another experience that I’ll always remember in this journey and something I see myself doing down the line. Winning the Top Print Model was a very flattering experience, and I am so very thankful for that honor. This was not only decided by the fashion experts of the industry but also by votes of the people which gave me a sense of validation of the steps I have taken so far.  However, my proudest moment was when my parents came to see me on stage, to support me doing what I love. It was truly a full circle moment.

3. What are your top tips to young women, particularly women of color on getting into modelling?

There is a place there for everybody. It’s an ever-evolving industry, stereotypes are falling behind, you don’t have to be necessarily tall or certain size to get work. In fact, plus-sized models are en vogue right now. It is hard for sure, really hard, but things are evolving. You must be good, top of your game. You must be prepared for rejection, and things not to go your way. The tip I have would be to keep your ego in check, still be confident, your let personality shine through. One key thing to remember is, there is a difference between being a runway or fashion model and being in a pageant. A pageant is a show where you are the product, showcasing your personality but, on the runway, the clothes or product you are showcasing need to shine. So, therefore, always, always, respect the designer and their vision.

4. As we get into summer, what are some of your "must have" fashion pieces in your closet right now?

That’s an interesting question. Summer is my favorite season by a mile. Being from New England you never know what the weather will be like from moment to moment. My own style is pretty casual. In summer, I like wearing a good pair of denim shorts, light t-shirts, sneakers and of course sunglasses. Comfort comes first! As far as fashion pieces in my closet, a long flowy gown is all time favorite evening outfit, comfortable yet edgy.

5. You are certainly a busy woman. Outside of work, how do you like to relax and unwind?

Being a mom, having a full-time job and part time modeling and acting career, it's always a struggle to find time to relax and unwind. I like to do yoga and swimming is my preferred gym activity. I enjoy going for long outdoor walks whenever I can. Have a newfound love for planting veggies and flowers, I am enjoying this phase! But the best times to relax must be with my son, my family and my small circle of friends.
