4 Steps to Getting Published: A Female Publisher shares Do’s and Don’ts to Writing

“Becoming an author was in my destiny. I believe it was my late mom’s guiding light that showed me the way. Slowly besides writing, learning the tricks and tips of the publishing industry became my passion. I decided to open my own company under the name of AABS PUBLISHING HOUSE .” A creative at heart from Kolkata, India, today’s woman dreamer, award-winning author and publisher Sunita Paul, shares the writing do’s and don’ts and 4 tips to getting published that every budding writer must know. Enjoy her story below!

  1. You describe yourself as an author, publisher and organizer. Tell us about these passions and how you have pursued them.

Since my teenage I’m into reading books and it was my most favourite hobby. Regarding writing I used to write casually and in school took part in several competitions. Slowly it developed into my passion and had few of my essays and articles published in some local magazines.

The big thing happened when I got published in Illustrated Weekly of India and Reader’s Digest . I felt on top of the world and dreamt of writing a book some day . Though everyone appreciated my poetry and essays but my main interest was in story writing and novels. I got the chance to make my dreams come true one day and as I said above how becoming an author was in my destiny I believe it was my late mom’s guiding light that showed me the way. Slowly besides writing, learning the tricks and tips of the publishing industry became my favourite passion and I decided to open my own company under the name of AABS PUBLISHING HOUSE . The name Aabs is actually the first initials of my two sons’, husband’s and my name. As I started the publishing company, there’s no looking back and thanks to the almighty and my parent’s I could publish and help many budding talents achieve their dreams . Book publishing includes author interviews, book launches, seminars, conferences and author’s felicitation ceremony.

It was in this way I was introduced to the world of events and functions and now Aabs Events has ventured into organising different kinds of events and functions both glamorous and academics with grand success.

2. What is your advice to budding writers, and those interested in publishing their own book?

There are no rules for writing, not all steps or tips can fit in everyone’s shoes but still in general I can list down some  Writing Do’s n Don’ts

Dont’s

• Don’t write bombastic words, overly long sentences or something which seems unrealistic to you too .

• Don’t use two negative words to make a positive meaning without any reason.

• Don’t write something vague, instead focus on concrete matter.

• Don’t use some fonts which are uncommon or non downloadable.

DO

• Do write in simple language which can be easily understood.

• Do follow the proper grammar and punctuation issues.

• Do follow your heart but also use your brain while writing

• Do write, read, edit and repeat

4 Publishing tips

•Write a clear synopsis/ introduction to approach for your book.

• Hire a good literary agent if you want to get published traditionally.

• Be precise, focus on what you are writing, you should be confident yourself and thoroughly researched.

• Create a professional website and clear account for your author’s profile. Your name should be in the search engines to make yourself known .

3. What is your favorite book that you have written?

My first book is always my favourite, INKED WITH LOVE ' published from the USA remains close to my heart. The poetry here is in my budding stage and I wrote not with an intention to become a bestseller but to reach and touch hearts of whoever I come across.

My first story book collection ' Surprising Strokes' also remains my favourite one and here each story ends with a surprising twist and that’s what captures the essence of the name righteously.

4. As a dreamcatchers platform we have to ask, what is your big personal or professional dream?

The Personal Dream should remain personal but I will share it here as it’s attached to my mother. I wish one day to establish a cancer research institute in her name or if that’s not possible at least one ward dedicated to the underprivileged ones who cannot afford to get their medical treatments done.

On the professional front Aabs Group of Companies is in cards and it is my dream venture to establish AAbs as a brand of great repute .
