From Stage to Screen: Anaya Joshi on Acting, Music, and Chasing Big Dreams

1. You began your acting career at a very young age. What inspired you to start acting, and how has your journey evolved over the years?

My acting journey is rooted from the artistic endeavors of both my parents as they dragged both my brother and I into all the plays and short films they were either creating or part of. Over the years I’ve been able to evolve and improve my skills through their support and push for me to grow as an actor and delve into different wings of acting such as theater, improv, films, musicals etc.

2. You’ve participated in numerous award-winning short films and theater productions. Can you share some of your most memorable experiences from these projects and what you’ve learned from them?

Yeah sure…oh man where do I start!!! It’s really hard to pick the most memorable one from so many wonderful and crazy experiences. Generally it’s a meaningful experience to go through the rehearsal process with a group of individuals and artists; you learn a lot from each artist you work with - in terms of their style, approach towards the character and building the backstory of the character etc.

Throughout all the things I have done - I have learned that it’s most important to cherish your time and enjoy the process of creating - it’s amazing how deep of a connection you can build in the industry even through smaller productions and interactions. At the end of the day - it truly comes down to seeing how people are influenced and moved by your collective performances - this is what continuously shapes me as an artist and an individual.

3. As a member of the a cappella group “Peanut Butter & Jelly” and other school choirs, you’ve achieved significant success. How do you prepare for these performances, and what do these achievements mean to you?

I have really begun to devote a big chunk of my life to music. Because of this, part of preparing is almost subconscious since I am immersing myself in whatever I need to prepare so the material is constantly running through my mind. On a more general note I am already committed to many rehearsal times, so I am growing, learning and preparing pretty much all the time.

Reiterating what I said before - knowing the people I work with - especially in a cappella where we need a good blend - has been able to bring our performance to another level since only after connecting with each other can we deeply connect with the audience through our music. I honestly have not thought long about the achievements - but if I really dig deep, they feel more motivation and help keep me going, especially in this career path, because I know there are many people grasping onto this idea of reaching the same goal as I am working towards. I am aware that it’s a risky path to want to pursue the arts and be an artist. Nonetheless, I will continue to put in the hard work and effort because I know it will pay off whether it be in 10 days or 10 years.

4. Your involvement in intensive training programs, such as SOCAPA and the New York Film Academy, has been extensive, and you recently worked with professional musicians and faculty at the Berklee School of Music. How have these experiences shaped your skills in acting/filmmaking and music?

Having the opportunity to work with trained professionals in these fields has not only helped me improve my skills but has also helped me realize where I should be in my journey. They helped give me a greater view of my path in the future, seeing as these are the people who are connected within the community I hope to grow into.

Often times/on the other hand, having these opportunities has also made me realize that there are so many areas that I still need to improve and work on - seeing all these talented people with so many skills I didn’t even know were attainable. Where I felt like I was mid-way through my journey of learning - once I worked with all these talented people it made me realize that I’m really only at the beginning of discovering such a vast field and all these professionals are so multi-talented and there is so much more to learn to become a better actor/filmmaker and musician.

5. As a platform for women dreamers, what is your next big dream?

My next big dream is to be a part of an impactful performance (be it through theater, music or film) that makes people FEEL and CONNECT with me as the artist/character/emotion I am portraying.
